What are the symptoms and how do you know you have it?

The symptoms of melanoma include a change in the colour, shape, size or even feel of an existing mole. However, melanoma can also appear as a new mole.

The ABCDE system can actually be the guidelines for one to know the possible symptoms of melanoma:

·Asymmetry: One half of a mole or birthmark does not match the other

·Border irregularity: The edges of the growth are irregular, notched or blurred. The pigment may spread into the surrounding skin

·Colour variation: The colour is uneven and different than the rest of the moles. Area of white, grey, pink or blue may be seen

·Diameter: An increase in the diameter normally larger than 6mm but some melanomas can be smaller

·Evolving: The mole keeps changing over the past weeks or months

However, not all the melanomas would fit the rules described above. Other warning sign are:

·A sore that does not heal

·New swelling beyond the border

·Change in sensation (itchiness, tenderness or pain)

·Change in surface of a mole (oozing, bleeding or scaliness)

It is very important to have your skin checked by a doctor if you have any of these warning signs as melanoma can be cured if it is diagnosed and treated in early stage.
